The hazard switch is one of the E21's more notorious problem areas, this one having been used on 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983 model year 320i and the often imported euro 323i 6 cylinder.

BMW routed many circuits through the E21 hazard switch and when it fails there is a wide range of electrical problems. There are two failure modes of the switch:

The switch fails in the On position, activating your hazard lights/turn signals and possibly other lights if you left them on (parked with shifter in reverse). This will drain your battery if you left your car unattended for too long.

The other failure is an internal failure of the electrical contacts, typical of vintage electrical components. This will leave you with no lights, horn, or turn signals (the opposite of the above).

323i note: as a Euro model the original hazard functions were different. The correct hazard switch part number is . However, this one should still work but may depend on wiring changes done to legalize the 323i for the US market.

This is a Genuine BMW E21 hazard switch for US market vehicles. Despite its flawed design we have found the Genuine BMW has the best quality and fitment. It comes with a two year warranty.
