On the E31, E32 and E34 chassis 5/7/8 series, the heating system needs an additional electric water pump to circulate the warm coolant and supply heat to all HVAC zones. When this water pump fails, it can leave your BMW with poorly working heat, or seemingly no heat at all. In these cases, replacing the bad / faulty aux water pump will resolve your heat problems on these models.
