This is a top quality pilot bearing, manufactured by FAG or INA, for most 1984-2003 BMW models, including E34 525i/530i/540i, E36 318i/323i/325i/328i/M3, E39 525i/ 528i/530i/540i/M5, E46 323i/328i, 2001-2002 E46 330i, E46 M3, 1999-2003 E53 X5 3.0, E60 M5, E63 M6, E9X M3, Z3 and MZ3, and E85 Z4M. It also fits all 2001-2006 E46 325i with 5-speed manual (not SMG). FAG and LuK/INA are some of the OEM suppliers to BMW for bearings It's a good idea to replace the pilot bearing any time the transmission is removed, especially for clutch, flywheel, or rear main seal replacement. This bearing is installed in the back of the crankshaft so access is limited to only when the transmission is removed which is why replacing it during a clutch job is the smart move. This is a low load bearing that usually does not see significant wear. Check the end of the input shaft for wear or scars that might indicate a problem with the bearing. A seized pilot bearing can affect the transmission input shaft, causing difficult shift engagement and potentially permanent transmission failure.
