This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 12311407440 (12-31-1-407-440) and Bosch as AL0804X and is described as Compact Alternator 120A (120 amp) for all 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 model BMW M5. This alternator is specifically for the E39 chassis / E39 M5, which used the S62 V8 engine.
The E39 M5 is and will always be a classic M car. But with age comes some level of upkeep. Among the items that can fail on your '00-'03 model M5 is the alternator, which generates power to all electrical systems. If your alternator fails, your M5 will likely be left dead and powerless. Replacing the alternator on the E39 M5 is fairly straight forward, and a new OEM Bosch alternator unit will ensure many new years of problem free driving. If your battery is quite old, now might also be a good time to refresh that as well.
The price of this alternator includes an optional core charge. Upon receipt and approval of your rebuildable E39 M5 alternator, a credit for the amount of the core charge will be refunded to your card. At least update, that core charge was $75. Please note this core charge can change at any time without warning.
