Has the alternator on your 50i powered 5, 6 or 7 series gone kaput? This is unfortunately a fairly typical failure on these vehicles at this age. The battery system was known to struggle on the 550i, 650Ci, 750i and 750Li, and over time this can cause your alternator to fail. Symptoms can include the battery / alternator warning light to illuminate, warnings on the iDrive system, abrupt "car will not start" events, as well as a breakdown leaving your 550i, 650i or 750i/Li waiting for a tow truck. 

Fortunately affordable OEM rebuilt units are available for much less than the BMW dealer. For cars produced 3/2005 and later. Not for cars produced before March of 2005. All 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 models are not an issue, but 2005 models you should check your BMW's production date before ordering.
