The belt tensioner maintains the correct tightness on the belt even as it ages and becomes longer. It self-adjusts so that the A/C compressor is always working within spec. The tensioner will need to be replaced if it can no longer adjust the belt on its own.
Not for Early 2008 models. The early S65 V8 powered M3 cars had a different drive belt setup, which use this "early" style AC belt tensioner. Only M3 models built April 2008 and after (04/2008 and later) use this later style belt tensioner. If your M3 was built before 04/2008, this is not the tensioner for your M3. If your M3 is a 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013 model year, then it is safe to buy this AC belt tensioner as all 2009-2013 use this later style.
If you're planning any belt service consider replacing the tensioner for peace of mind. A tensioner should be replaced on every other belt change (or every 80-100,000 miles).
