This is the replacement hydraulic tensioner for the main drive belt on 1998-2003 M62, M62TU, and S62 engines used in the E39 5-series, E38 7-series, E31 8-series, and E53 X5. This is the only the tensioner itself, not the complete assembly, but can be replaced on its own. The tensioner is like a small shock absorber that maintains pressure on the belt. A loose belt will cause insufficient charging from the alternator, poor cooling performance from the water pump, and stiffer steering from lower power steering pump output. It might also lead to the belt slipping from the pulleys or premature belt wear.
If you can, inspect and test the pulleys - tensioner, idler, water pump, and power steering. Or plan to order new pulleys at the same time. These pulleys are made of plastic and shatter with age, causing potentially expansive/expensive damage to your engine, radiator, etc. They usually last longer than the belt but now is the best time to replace them. Since they are bolted on, not pressed, they are easy to replace.
This tensioner is manufactured by INA, the original supplier to BMW for this part and other engine components. Since it is an OEM part, it conforms to the original design that BMW specified for the engines listed above. It comes with a two year warranty.
