Steering Wheel Clock Spring Cartridge - E60, E63, E64 - 61316976394

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 61316976394 (61 31 6 976 394) and is described as Steering Wheel Coil Spring Cartridge (Clock Spring Cartridge) for for 2006-2010 E60/E61 5 Series and E63/E64 6 series (including E60 M5 and E63 M6) that came WITHOUT heater steering wheel and WITHOUT lane departure warning system. If your 5 or 6 series BMW came without a heated steering wheel and without lane departure warning system, and was a model year 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 or 2010, this is most likely the steering wheel clock spring unit you need. 

This steering wheel slip ring unit houses what's known as a "steering angle sensor", which tells your BMW's electronic subsystems what angle your steering wheel is turned. This is critical data for your DSC dynamic stability control system. If the steering angle sensor fails, it will create an error for the "steering angle sensor" that may not be solvable without a new part. 

Inside this assembly is a complex series of ribbon cables, wound up in such a way to allow full motion of the steering wheel while not pinching or constricting the array of wiring required to connect your airbag and steering wheel multi-function buttons. The internal ribbons can break, or can become tangled. It's also common during disassembly of the steering wheel for the clocking ribbons to fall out (perhaps in you or your mechanics lap?) and be essentially impossible to reassemble. In any case, a new air bag clock spring cartridge will likely be needed.
