Rogue Engineering OCTANE Short Shift Kits are our favorite performance shifter kits here at BimmerWorld. The attention to detail and the level of engineering in every aspect creates the ultimate shifter for your E36 M3* and 328. Instead of designing a shifter to fit a number of applications, RE engineers their shift kits specifically for your application for a no-compromise fit and feel. RE OCTANE SSKs decrease throw by 30-50% depending on the application, and they come with all the hardware needed for a complete installation.

Detailed description of the OCTANE SSK components:

Short Shifter Lever
The RE OCTANE SSK features a CNC-machined 303 stainless steel upper section. This adds 100g to the top of the lever when compared to aluminum, and this small increase in mass compliments the incorporated WSR for an unbeatable shifter feel. The outside profile is designed to allow precise fitment of the factory shift knob, so a factory illuminated shift knobs an still be used. The shifter also incorporates a POWERBAND feature, so no matter how hard you twist or pull the shifter lever in the vehicle, the bond will never separate. By using a custom-extruded neoprene rubber insert, the OCTANE shifter is able to minimize NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) more than any other shifter on the market, as well as removing any unwanted shifter free play.

The lower portion of the OCTANE SSK is made from CNC'd 303 stainless steel. This material was selected for its superior corrosion resistance and strength. While there's no difference in manufacturing costs to machine an integrated pivot ball, Rogue Engineering instead uses Ertalyte TX, a thermoplastic material, for the shifter's pivot ball for its vibration-dampening qualities and built-in lubricity. Plus it adds superior resistance to heat and wear, unlike rigid metal balls or bushings. With a coefficient of friction that is 421% better than a stainless steel pivot ball, it combines all the benefits of smooth movement with durability beyond all other thermoplastics.

Weighted Selector Rod (WSR)
It's the smooth and precise action of the OCTANE SSK that sets it apart from the others, and most of that comes from the unique Weighted Selector Rod. With the WSR, you get all the benefits of a short shifter while improving shifter smoothness and virtually eliminating the gearbox notchiness and noise associated with other kits. When shifter throw is reduced, there's a proportional increase in effort: a 30% reduction generally means a 30% increase in effort. We find that to eliminate any benefits, and that's why we recommend the Rogue Engineering WSR-based OCTANE that replaces the factory selector rod with the higher quality CNC'd 303 stainless version that has significantly greater mass. All the benefit, none of the drawbacks.

Full CNC'd Shifter Support Carrier
Rogue Engineering completely redesigned the shifter support assembly from CNC'd billet aluminum for heavy-duty use and to retain the factory shifter geometry for smooth shifts. This engineered solution reproduces the proper selector rod geometry for smoother shifts, less load on the linkage, and more drive shaft clearance.

*For E36 M3s produced up to 9/94, replacing the selector rod gear joint with updated BMW # 25 11 1 222 688 is required.

*E36 M3 Euro 6-Speed has a cast alloy carrier that has been modified to fit the European transmission.
