This crankcase vent pipe and fresh air pipe runs from the bank 2 (left side) valve cover on N63 engines and includes a check valve to keep oil vapor from returning to the cylinder head. This part fits the 1st generation N63 engine (N63A) for 2011-2013 550i, 2012 650i, 2009-2012 750i, 2011-2013 X5 50i, and 2008-2013 X6 50i.
A related hose runs from this vent to the intake manifold on the side of the engine - BMW part #11157575641 (see Related Items below).
The crankcase vent system is responsible for separating oil from the air inside the engine and air intake. Liquid oil is returned to the oil pan while oil vapors are sent to the intake manifold to be burned up during the combustion cycle. It's also known as a a PCV, CCV, oil separator, and a cyclonic separator system. Too much oil in the intake air lowers the effective fuel octane, leads to drivability issues, and causes increased emissions. A completely blocked CCV has the potential for very serious engine failure (hydrolock) if liquid oil ends up in the intake. Signs of a failing CCV include: whistling noises in the intake, blueish smoke in the exhaust, high oil consumption, and thick white or yellow gunk under the oil cap. Note: high oil consumption on the N63 has
several potential causes.
This is a Genuine BMW N63 vent hose with a two year warranty. Buying a Genuine part will usually be more expensive than an OEM or aftermarket brand but you are assured that it meets BMW's designs for fitment, performance, and longevity. It will also be the very latest design, incorporating any updates or revisions that an aftermarket brand typically will ignore.
