The BimmerWorld View: LL-04 oil is an optimal oil recommendation for 2007+ BMW turbo engines with direct injection (every N54, N55, S55, B46, B58, S58, N63, and S63). LL04 oil has medium levels of SAPS (sulphated ash and phosphorus) - a byproduct of combustion. High levels of SAPS, such as from an older LL-01 oil can worsen carbon buildup and damage catalytic converters. The Pentosin SP III oil has lower SAPS output, making it a better oil choice compared to older 5W30 oil formulations.
Pentosin SP III 5W30 meets BMW LL-04 standards and is SN and ACEA C3 rated. This LL-04 oil is a low ash (low SAPS) formula that is more compatible with newer factory ceramic catalytic converters than the previous LL-01 formula. We like this oil as a premium alternative to factory BMW oil for daily street use. Our recommended oil change interval is 5,000-6,000 miles with regular used oil analysis.
LL-04 oil is often mistaken as a "Diesel-only" oil. It was originally designed for Euro market gas and Diesel fuels with very low sulfur levels. However, since 2014 most US fuels match the European sulfur levels which makes any LL-04 oil ideal for performance or high mileage BMW engines. LL-04 oils can be back-dated to be compatible with any models calling for 5W30 LL-01 oil.
