As the suspension and the sway bar go through their motions the link rotates and twists. Stock links suffer from high-friction materials and a small surface area that wears quickly. On lowered cars the ball joints are often out of position, or at an extreme articulation, which puts greater strain on the ball joint and causes faster wear. If you hear clunking from the front suspension, especially over bumps and potholes, the sway bar links should be evaluated.
