This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 13627567451 (13-62-7-567-451) and is described as HFM/Mass Air Sensor for 2001-2002 E46 330i, 2001-3/2003 E46 330ci, 2001-2005 E46 330xi, E39 530i, E53 X5 3.0i, and Z3 3.0i models. This is the "early style" HFM with the 3-pin connector.

The airflow sensor or HFM (Hot Film Meter) is hugely important in the performance and fuel economy of the engine. Faulty airflow sensors usually cause rough running, poor idle, lack of performance, misfires, and higher fuel consumption. There may also be fault codes and check engine lights for air:fuel mixture, lean conditions, rich conditions, misfires, and others. 

This mass air sensor / HFM is made by Continental VDO, the same original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that supplies BMW at the production line. This sensor is "plug and plug" with accurately calibrated readings just like the dealer part - but at a fraction of the price. This is the HFM we use on our own BimmerWorld E46 race and project cars, as well as on our own employee cars.
