The N54 engine has two phases of oil circulation/venting: under boost (high side) and under vacuum (low side). This kit replaces the high side oil vent system with an oil catch can (OCC) to better trap liquid oil before it makes its way into the turbo intake. This is a complete kit, ready to install - no guesswork!
The high side system works under boost - basically whenever you're heavy into the throttle. The factory system is designed to open a flapper valve in the valve cover and let oil vapor escape quickly and easily. The oil vapor is routed to the turbo intake duct behind the intake manifold via a plastic hose (BMW part #11157553949). Since all of the factory components are plastic they are very weak and will fail with age, exposure to heat, and vibration. This kit will eliminate the weak flapper valve and plastic hose system. New hoses use -10 AN and aluminum fittings so you can toss the plastic bits in the garbage once and for all!
An oil catch can is a reservoir that traps liquid oil in the can while allowing the vapor portion to escape. A small amount of liquid oil will accumulate in the can. During your regular engine oil changes - or in between - un-screw the can from the head and dispose of the liquid oil. The catch can is mounted on the driver side using the factory strut brace arm. Note: the hose for this system interferes with the plastic cowl at the base of the windshield and the cowl must be removed. The microfilters in the cowl must be replaced with filters from Burger Motorsports (
link).
Spec Options:Recirculate (
PCV) - oil vapor will leave the catch can and return to the intake duct behind the manifold. This is how the factory system is designed and some oil vapor is intended to be burned up during regular combustion.
Vent-to-Atmosphere (
VTA) - instead of running back into the intake the oil vapor will dissipate in your engine bay through a small external filter. A cap is included for your intake duct. This is obviously no longer a sealed system and oil vapor is bad for the environment and will produce a foul odor. It may also leave an oily film in the engine bay.

Notes:1. This kit is the high side vent system only. The low side vacuum venting remains original. You can upgrade the low side system separately.
2. The catch can and hose will not fit with the factory cowl cover. It must be removed and the cowl filters replaced with ones from Burger Motorsports.
