The heating/cooling fan on your BMW E46 323i 325i 325xi 328i 330i 330xi and E46 M3 consists of two main parts: the blower motor and the blower resistor. Trouble with the heater fan, blower, or windshield defogger such as erratic behavior, fan only works on one speed, or the fan stays on even after the car is shut off usually indicate the resistor has failed. Resistor failures are more common than motor failures. Testing the blower motor should narrow down which part needs replacing, although failing motors have been known to cause resistor failures too so replacing both, along with a new microfilter, will give you a fresh start.
