Transmission Oil Cooler Regulator Valve - E39 540i 99-03, E38 740i/iL 750il 99-01

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 17211437772 (17-21-1-437-772) and is described as Transmission Oil Cooler Regulator Valve used on the E39 540i (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, E38 740i 740iL 750il (1999, 2000, 2001). 

This special valve is the source of many transmission related issues on the E39 540i and E38 740i/750iL models. It controls oil flow to a transmission fluid cooler, and when it fails it causes a lot of grief. Many owners and mechanics mistakenly diagnosis a transmission failure, when all they need to replace this regulating valve. 

If this thermostatic valve fails and gets stuck closed, it will prevent the transmission fluid from passing through the oil cooler, which will make the transmission temp soar, triggering fault codes, transmission temperature and error warnings, can put a 540i/740i/740iL/750iL into limp mode, cause hard and jarring shifts, hesitation to shift and more. If your E38 or E39 model uses this transmission cooler regulator valve, and is experiencing issues like this we suggest inspecting and replacing your valve.
