Front Aggregate Protective Plate - 51718218384 - Early E46 (1999-2000)

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 51718218384 (51 71 8 218 384) and is described as Genuine BMW Front Aggregate Protective Plate (a skid plate, or sorts) made for all 1999 and 2000 model E46 3 series (this is the early version). This includes all E46 323i, 323Ci, 328i and 328Ci models, which were only offered in the 1999 and 2000 model years. 

This stamped steel plate bolts to your 1999, 2000, and early 2001 production 3 series front underbody a the front subframe, beneath the engine bay, and offers extra protection for gravel, stones or hard road debris - much like a skid plate. It only takes one unlucky piece of gravel kicking up under your cooling system to cause a catastrophic failure, especially if that object hits a critical component. 

This metal protective skid plate was design by BMW to be used in areas of the word where driving on harsh or loosely paved roads were common. It can be added to any early model E46 for additional protection, and is great if you frequently drive on dirt or gravel surfaces. 

Not for cars produced after 2/2001 - All 1999 and 2000 models should work, but owners of 2001 models will need to check their production date, found on the driver's door jamb VIN plate, usually formatted as 10/00 (October 2000) or 5/01 (May 2001). Any date after 02/01 will need the late style protective plate, BMW part # 51717028893 (and not this one).
