Hood Shock, OEM - E24 633CSi/635CSi/M6, E23 733i/735i

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 51231869147 (51-23-1-869-147) and is described as Hood Shock for the first generation BMW E24 6-series and E23 7-series.

This E24 and E23 hood shock is an OEM gas shock to replace the tired shocks that no longer hold up your hood, or prevent it from dropping on your head. It's pressure calibrated for the specific weight of the hood, so that it provides the factory designed amount of assist when opening and closing your hood. This part is also known as a hood strut, and acts to both reduce the weight of the hood when opening, as well as dampen the force when closing your hood. 

If your hood is not staying open, requiring an extra hand to hold it up, or it's slamming shut with much too much force, it's probably time for a pair of new hood shocks to correct the issue. 

BMW used this gas pressurized sprint strut on all 6 series made from 5/1979 (May of 1979) and on. You'll find it on all 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989 model year 6 series, including E24 M6, 635Csi, 633Csi and 630Csi.

This is an OEM hood shock manufactured by Stabilus or TRW - the original supplier to BMW for hood and trunk shocks. Both Stabilus and TRW are part of the ZF Group and packaging may be one or the other. As the OEM it meets all of BMW's original design, fitment, and performance requirements and is TUV approved. OEM parts are the best alternative to more expensive Original BMW parts because they are virtually identical without the inflated price tag. This part has a two year warranty.
