Insert 10X7 - 51131870459 - E30, E31, E32, E34

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 51131870459 (51 13 1 870 459) and is described as Insert 10X7, which is a sealing grommet as used on various exterior trim pieces on E30, E30 M3, E31, E32, E34, and E34 M5 model BMWs. 

Some of the uses of this little insert are the exterior mirrors of E32 7 series and E34 5 series, license plate base attachments (to prevent metal-to-metal contact when installing the rear license plate base), and other exterior moulding and trim pieces. 

This piece seems kind of expensive for what it is -- but it's built by BMW with a purpose, which is to seal out contaminents and prevent oxidization that can form with metal-on-metal contact. There's a small metallic reinforcement ring inside this grommet, for strength, and then the outside is a soft plastic that sandwiches in when installed. This is pretty critical when reinstalling the items that use them (mirrors, license plate bases, exterior trim, etc). So we suggest spending the extra few dollars to make sure you have the right fasteners for the job. This is an OEM/OE fastener, so you are assured of the highest quality.
