This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 51478219185 (51 47 8 219 185) and is described as Genuine BMW Front Left Entrance Cover, Chrome, as used on some E46 3 series models. 

This door sill trim piece installed on the threshold / entry of the left side (driver's side on US / left hand drive models) door jamb. It's very common for the sill strip trim to get scuffed up, and the chrome to get water penetration and start to bubble up and eventually start to flake off. This is an ugly welcome when you get inside your car! It's common for the driver door sill trim to get worn and damamged first, as it's often the most used door of the four found on the car. 

This piece is found on both 4 door sedan and 4 door touring wagon models. 

Not for 2 door models.
