Alpha-N software tuning features:
- ECI programming cable
- One hour of remote tuning
- True custom tuning of your car on a dyno for any combination of modifications
- One file revision thereafter
Alpha-N is a hidden tuning feature of the stock M3's MSS54 engine computer. Alpha-N is a tuning strategy that makes the file unique to that car and its modifications. The car must be tuned on the dyno to dial in your engine and get the most horsepower and torque.
The standard ECU programming relies on sensors like the HFM to set its tuning. Most of the time the ECU is trying to adapt and compensate for something - air quality, fuel quality, requested load, and emissions output. Alpha-N is much more narrow in scope and does not process HFM data to make fuel and ignition changes. It is not adaptive so there is no loss in performance because the ECU thinks it needs to adjust power or hit an emissions or fuel economy target. It's greatest attribute is that it never deviates from the intended values you set it to.
Alpha-N consists of multiple "fixed" engine maps custom written for a specific car on the dyno - no two Alpha-N tunes are the same. It's custom tailored for that car and its modifications and environment. At its most basic, Alpha-N programming relies on only two parameters: throttle position and RPM. However, we also take into consideration things like intake air temp, barometric pressure, and fuel quality to optimize the engine tuning. Alpha-N is what the M3 CSL used for engine mapping and what we use with our CSL-style carbon airbox package. If your car has cams or forced induction, the Alpha-N tuning is a must!
Since there is no Lambda-based adaption with Alpha-N it's critical to have the car re-tuned for any major changes to the engine spec. We will re-tune the car once after the initial tune or more often for a nominal fee. You will also want to have the tuning adjusted for a significant change in elevation. You must also ensure the engine is maintained to a very high standard as even things like a clogged air filter will alter performance and drivability. Alpha-N is not recommended for street use unless the engine is heavily modified and you use more than 70% throttle most of the time. Part throttle tuning is not as important in Alpha-N strategy and we mostly focus on full throttle tuning. An HFM-based adaptive tune will be far more compatible for life on the street.
Dyno note: one hour of tuning time is included with this price, however, that time should not include any set up or other mechanical work on the car. Remote tuning will be arranged ahead of time so please have your car ready to go at the agreed upon time. BimmerWorld welcomes tuning at our facility in Virginia.
