The S54 is an amazing engine and can find its way into any number of chassis and vehicles. But due to the complexities of OBD electronics, it's never a straight-forward swap. Even if the S54 fits in your engine bay, you can't just turn the key and fire it up. Thankfully, the original BMW Siemens MSS54 ECU has been unlocked by the experts at Epic Motorsports and we can offer you the benefits of a true stand-alone conversion into almost any BMW chassis*. There are a number of ways to go about this conversion and we have filtered it down to three options:

1. No ECU harness. You will be responsible for fabricating your own harness using MSS54 ECU connectors and pin-out. Recommended only for experienced builders and we cannot offer tech help on wiring conversions.
2. With a pigtail harness. MSS54 ECU connectors but with un-terminated ends so you can wire it any way you like. Wiring is included for the bare minimum to run the engine: ECU power, ECU ground, RPM signal, fuel pump relay, basic diagnostics, CAN low and high leads (typically for race dash use). You must supply the ECU harness with this option.
3. With a Plug-n-Play harness. ECU and engine harness are "ready to go" with original BMW connectors. This will be the most finished-looking option but will require significant planning and layout on your part. We supply the harness to your build specification. You must supply the ECU harness and the swap car harness with this option. Inquire for further details.

Engine software and EWS-delete is included with your purchase! An S54 engine conversion requires software changes no matter what car it's going into. Normally this involves turning off items and modules that were required for the E46 but will not be used in another vehicle, such as: DSC, general body module, and certain emissions equipment**. This is the heart of the conversion and our work is a trade secret but we simplify the ECU and wiring so the S54 will run flawlessly with only the bare minimum of wiring. We also include a Street Performance or Race tune to match your build for some impressive power gains as well (26whp, 19wft-lbs).

Software tunes:
Performance - an "off-the-shelf" tune that produces superior power and torque gains. This is a street tune and assumes that the original S54 wiring harness, all oxygen sensors, and EGT sensor will be retained and catalytic converters will be in place (with post-cat O2 sensors).
Race - tuned specifically for cars that see full-time track duty and have cat-delete, headers, straight exhaust, and other mods. The tuning is done based on popular mods used in our own race cars as well as others we have built for customers. Typically the tuning is the same as our Performance tune but with track-specific changes such as EGT and O2 sensor thresholds and other changes for track duty. Race software is sold for off-road use only (see emissions info below).

EWS-delete coding is included. This is required anyway so we made it part of the package. This will allow the ECU to work on any vehicle, even if it still has its original factory EWS in place. You can even retain your original ignition switch and key.

Software flash: all of the software above is installed by a direct flash of the ECU itself at Epic Motorsports. Contact us for specific shipping instructions before shipping your ECU. Turn-around time is typically 2-3 weeks. The ECI flashing tool is available for an additional $100 and this allows you to read internal fault codes and flash other Epic software files (no other brand). However, your car must have a working 16-pin OBD port and wired to the ECU in the car. Only the E46, E39, Z4, and certain Z3 models will have it already in place. Other models will need to add the OBD port and wiring to the ECU, which is not included with this package.

* We do not include technical assistance for installing an S54 engine in your car. Due to the wide range of wiring schematics for the array of BMW models this swap can be installed in, you will need a wiring diagram for your car - we do not include wiring instructions.

** Several ECU features are disabled when transplanting the S54 into a non-E46 chassis: cruise control, DSC, A/C, low oil level sensor, and TPMS.

Notice of Emissions Non-Compliance. We make no claims or warranties on the legality of your engine swap. In our own experience, the vehicle assumes the emissions standards for the engine, not the vehicle year or model. Under this scenario your car may have to conform to emissions regulations for an E46 M3 in your state and/or county. Our street performance software is designed for use on cars that retain all of the E46 M3 emissions equipment but it has not been CARB or EPA certified. Removing, disabling, or altering emissions equipment on a pollution-controlled road vehicle is illegal. Installing devices or software that trick, disable, or modify emissions controls and monitors on a pollution-controlled road vehicle is also illegal. Race software is intended only for racing vehicles that may never be used, or registered or licensed for use, upon a public highway. BimmerWorld may confirm a customer's racing license, entry, track participation, and we may ask for photos or proof of a permanent race car build. We reserve the right to cancel part(s) that are not for legitimate racing or track purposes. These products are not legal for sale or use in California on any pollution-controlled motor vehicle, or in any state or province that has adopted CARB standards.
