This expansion tank is a high failure item on the E39 M5. The plastic gets brittle with age and constant heat cycling from hot to cold. Cracks occur and if you're lucky it will fail with just a slight leak. In many cases an expansion tank failure on the E39 M5 can be quite dramatic, dumping a large amount of coolant rapidly, sending your S62 V8 into an overheating condition without warning.
