These 4 coolant pipes are often replaced as "while you're in there" parts during a starter, crankcase vent, or intake manifold removal on 1999-2006 E46 323i/325i/328i/330i. The plastic coolant pipes tend to leak as they corrode and crack inside the cylinder head. These 4 hoses are the hidden cooling circuit under the manifold.
E46 Return Hose Set includes:

Why 4 hoses? The plastic pipes are what fail but they are connected to two rubber hoses running to the coolant expansion tank and radiator. You can separate the pipes from the hoses in the engine bay, which will be messy and risk breaking the plastic connector. With the set of 4, you can pre-assemble the pipes and hoses off the car, saving time and a potential headache. The coolant should be drained anyway and it's easier at the expansion tank/radiator. If you don't plan to drain the coolant, then only buy the two plastic pipes. No other hardware or clamps are needed.
Top Tip: the plastic pipes will likely be cracked inside the cylinder head. Removing the pipes will usually leave pieces of the pipe still in the head. Make sure you extract all of the original plastic pieces and o-rings from the head before installing the new pipes. Remember that the new pipes include 2 o-rings at the ends so 2 o-rings may be stuck in the head.
