Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler, BMW - F22, F30, F32

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 17217600553 (17 21 7 600 553) and is described as a Automatic Transmission Heat Exchanger (Oil Cooler) for most F22 2-series, F30/F31/F34 3-series, and F32/F33/F36 4-series.

This oil-to-water heat exchanger is located behind the driver side fender liner, along the driver side frame rail. It can be hard to find at first, but could be the source for fault codes and poor shifting on automatic models. If you are having transmission temperature faults, hard or hesitation when shifting, it could be that this cooler has internally clogged or failed, increasing the oil temps of your transmission. The fix for this issue is a new heat exchanger / transmission oil cooler unit.

Fitment note: BMW lists two heat exchangers for F3X models, this 17217600553 and 17217600550. Both are listed for Automatic and Sport Automatic transmissions and both use the same mounting bracket and hoses. This 553 cooler is the correct one for F30/F32 with M Sport package (but other models without M Sport also used this). There may be a difference in the thermostat used on each but we have not confirmed. You may want to physically confirm the part number on the unit before the install.

This is a Genuine BMW F3X auto transmission oil cooler with a two year warranty. Buying a Genuine part will usually be more expensive than an OEM or aftermarket brand but you are assured that it meets BMW's designs for fitment, performance, and longevity. It will also be the very latest design, incorporating any updates or revisions that an aftermarket brand typically will ignore.
