Intake Thermostat - M50 - E36 325i M3, E34 525i

The Intake Thermostat is a valve that opens and closes based on the temperature of the intake air as it flows through the airbox.

In cold conditions, the valve allows coolant to flow through the throttle body to keep it warm and free of ice.
