The heating system uses this electric booster pump to control the flow of coolant through the heater core. If your heat is not as strong as it used to be - especially at idle or low RPM - this auxiliary water pump may be the cause. The heater core cannot cycle enough hot coolant on its own and relies on this electric pump to keep the fluid moving. Don't assume it's a bad engine thermostat without also considering the aux pump. The pump can be tested but at that point you might as well replace it, especially with higher mileage or age.
