The mechanical water pump on the N63 V8 engine is essentially a wear item. With enough miles, stress, and age/time, eventually the water pump will fail and create a coolant leak or engine overheating situation that will leave your F10 550i, F06/F12/F13 650i, F01/F02 750i, E70 X5 50i, F15 X5 50i, E71 X6 50i, or F16 X6 50i broken down. And with cooling requirements on the N63 (turbos, intercoolers, transmission, etc) the water pump is tasked with more cooling demands than other designs. This pump uses a composite impeller - the same design as the OE BMW pump.
BMW recommends the blind plug on the front of the pump also be replaced, BMW part #11531439134. See below for link.
