The automatic transmission filter should be changed during any fluid change. Don't wait for the transmission to show signs of wear, internal damage, or fault codes. Proactively replace the fluid and filter as part of your regular maintenance plan. It might also be a good idea to replace the Mechatronix connector sleeve (BMW part #24347588725) at the same time as it's a known leak point that can only be fixed with the pan off.

Automatic transmission fluid and filter servicing on modern BMWs is a complex procedure that takes skill and special tools and knowledge. It is not recommended for the casual DIY mechanic. For anyone not accustomed to transmission service, this job should be left for the experienced professional.
