Dual Mass Flywheel, OEM - E9X M3 6MT 08-13

Modern BMWs use a dual mass flywheel (DMF) to dampen driveline vibrations and help make clutch operation smoother, but as many BMW owners realize, they don't last forever. Sachs, an OEM supplier to BMW, recommends replacing the DMF with every other clutch. But in some cases the clutch has been abused so much that damage extends to the flywheel. If you're planning a clutch job consider also buying a new flywheel to have on hand.

There are symptoms of BMW DMF failure and needs to be replaced: build-up of clutch material or damage to the clutch contact surface, excessive play between the two halves of the DMF (if the outer flywheel section can rotate more than 20mm in either direction), and grease leaking out from inside the flywheel assembly. A worn DMF does not just impact performance or clutch operation, it's a big safety issue as well. A DMF that breaks apart can be catastrophic to the transmission as well as dangerous to the driver and passenger.

This is an OEM E9X M3 flywheel manufactured by LuK - the original supplier to BMW for this part, as well as many other clutch components. As the OEM it meets all of BMW's original design, fitment, and performance requirements and is TUV approved. OEM parts are the best alternative to more expensive Original BMW parts because they are virtually identical without the inflated price tag. This part has a two year warranty.

2008 fitment note: BMW had a different 6MT flywheel and clutch for cars produced up to 9/2008. The 2008 parts have been discontinued and superseded to the 2009+ parts. When purchasing a new OEM flywheel choose any E9X M3 6MT clutch. If you have a 2009-2013 M3 6-speed, this flywheel is a direct replacement and no other parts are required.

Clutch Return Spring: BMW also recommends replace the return spring on the clutch pedal arm if it has not already been replaced. See BMW part #35006769442 under the Related Items below. Even if it has been replaced it may not be a bad idea to change it anyway.
