Single Mass Flywheel Conversion Kit for M54 engine in 3/2003-2006 E46 330i 6-speed and 2004-2005 E60 530i. This kit comes complete with everything you need to eliminate the troublesome dual mass flywheel and replace it with a more reliable single mass flywheel and sprung hub clutch.

Modern BMWs use a dual mass flywheel (DMF) to dampen driveline vibrations and help make clutch operation smoother. But many BMW owners have realized that they don't last forever. Even though the official replacement interval is with every other clutch job, it's not uncommon to have to replace the flywheel with every new clutch. Unfortunately, you won't know if the flywheel is bad until the transmission and clutch have been removed. This kit includes a new single-mass flywheel and standard clutch kit with all of the necessary mounting hardware. This is really your best option for replacing the clutch and flywheel and getting rid of the troublesome dual mass flywheel.

Signs of a failed BMW DMF include: build-up of clutch material or damage to the clutch contact surface, excessive play between the two halves of the DMF (if the outer flywheel section can rotate more than 20mm in either direction), and grease leaking out from inside the flywheel assembly. A worn DMF does not just impact performance or clutch operation, it's a big safety issue as well. A DMF that breaks apart can be catastrophic to the transmission as well as dangerous to the driver and passenger.

The single mass flywheel in this conversion kit does away with the complex dual mass damper system. It's a solid steel flywheel like older model BMWs had from the factory. It is not a lightweight aluminum flywheel like we sell for track or race cars. This kit is intended for daily driver street use as an OEM alternative to the expensive factory flywheel. Valeo's goal was to maintain OEM levels of drivability and operation. Because the DMF is eliminated, transmission rattle noises may be more noticeable and could be irritating to some owners. However, there is actually a small improvement in clutch feel and operation that will be welcomed by many others. The flywheel weighs 24lbs and the entire assembly weighs less than 40lbs (roughly the same as the stock assembly).

The clutch kit is specifically built to work with this flywheel. Valeo has cleverly transferred the damper system from the flywheel to the clutch assembly. Under this system the flywheel/clutch unit still absorbs driveline vibration much like the original dual mass flywheel. But without the extra complexity and cost of the DMF. When this clutch wears out you are less likely to also have to replace the flywheel.

This kit is manufactured by Valeo, an OEM supplier to BMW for some clutch components as well as many other parts and systems. All parts in this kit come with a two year warranty.

This kit includes everything you need for a dual-mass to single-mass flywheel conversion:

  • single mass flywheel (replaces BMW #21207533868)
  • pilot bearing pre-installed on flywheel
  • clutch kit (disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing) (replaces BMW #21207531556)
  • pressure plate bolts
  • flywheel bolts
  • alignment tool

This kit fits 6-speed 2003-2006 models (not 5-speed or SMG models).
