Is your BMW indicating (erroneously) that your oil level is low? Yet you've checked the dipstick, and the level is ideal. You may need a new oil level sensor! This is a common failure part and can make your yellow oil level warning lamp come on -- usually when you first start the car, as well as when you turn it off. 

Even if you check the dipstick, you should change this sensor. "Why?", you may ask. Answer: Because if you were to develop a real loss of oil level, and dismissed it as an erroneous message, you could do catastrophic damage to your engine while driving with low oil. 

This particular sensor fits BMWs with the M52, M54, and S54 6 cylinder engines found in the 1999-2005 E46 3 Series, E39 and E60 5 Series, E53 X5 3.0, Z3, Z4 and E46 M3. It also is used on several V8 engines including the M62, S62 used on V8 model E39 5 Series and 7 series (including E39 540i, E39 M5 and E38 740i/iL) as well as the M73 V12 engine found in the E38 750iL.
