Tech Note: It is not unusual for the oil filter to break during removal and become stuck in the oil filter housing of the B58 engine.  The BMW dealer recommends replacement of the housing if the filter breaks during removal.  This is to avoid contamination of the engine oil system, which could lead to oil starvation and internal engine damage.  To help prevent the filter issue from happening, we recommend replacing your oil filter more frequently than the dealer-recommended oil service interval.
