The variable valve timing (VANOS) on the M3 S65 V8 is driven by these solenoids. There's a solenoid for each camshaft (4 total) and if they fail, the VANOS will cease to function or be slow to respond to commands from the ECU. There are very few warning signs of a VANOS failure but if you notice a loss of torque at certain RPM or worse fuel economy, these might be indications of a VANOS issue (among other causes). An experienced shop will have the computer and tools to test the VANOS system. There will usually be an associated fault code and check engine light for VANOS control or operation, and in extreme cases there will be reduced power and limp mode.

This is the VANOS solenoid for an exhaust camshaft. Bank 1 and 2 use the same part. You'll find this solenoid on all 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 model M3 sedan, coupe, and convertible.
