This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 11158636540 (11 15 8 636 540) and is described as the set of oil separators in the valve covers on early N63 and S63 V8 engines in 2011-2013 F10 550i, 2012 F12/F13 650i, 2009-2012 F02 750i, 2010-2013 E70 X5M, 2010-2014 E71 X6M models. Each V8 engine valve cover contains an oil separator.

Only for first-generation N63 and S63 engines.

Not for F06 650i Gran Coupe models.

The oil separators are responsible for separating oil from the air inside the engine and air intake. Liquid oil is returned to the oil pan while oil vapors are sent to the intake manifold to be burned up during the combustion cycle. It's also known as a a PCV, crankcase vent, CCV, and a cyclonic separator system. Too much oil in the intake air lowers the effective fuel octane, leads to drivability issues, and causes increased emissions. A completely blocked CCV has the potential for very serious engine failure (hydrolock) if liquid oil ends up in the intake. Signs of a failing CCV include: whistling noises in the intake, blueish smoke in the exhaust, high oil consumption, and thick white or yellow gunk under the oil cap.
