Venting crankcase pressure is a challenge on the N54, S55, and other BMW engines. This new oil filler cap has been engineered to vent crankcase and oil vapors on cars making big boost. It can be used on its own (the more venting the better) or with other improvements to the N54 crankcase vent system.
Poor venting and circulation causes pressure to build up inside the crankcase which spills over to other areas of the engine. At first the excess pressure causes oil to leak through various seals, including the turbos themselves. The stock crankcase vent (CCV) system is infamous for failing to adequately vent and separate oil even on stock engines. But add more boost and the stock CCV becomes a constant challenge.
This breather cap has been specifically engineered for the BMW valve cover. It has the same two-prong locking tabs as the original oil cap. The breather uses four stainless steel filter screens, PTFE one-way check ball, anodized aluminum housing, and high quality vent-to-atmosphere filter. Total height is 2 1/8" and fitment has been confirmed on the N54 models listed below. It may also fit other turbo models as well (better crankcase venting is always a good thing) but we are limiting fitments to N54 and S55 only.
Performance Note: smoke or vapor exiting this filter is normal and indicates good venting (although a lot of smoke means you don't have enough venting somewhere else). However, liquid oil exiting the filter indicates a more serious problem such as very poor piston ring sealing.
