Genuine BMW 10W60 M "TwinPower Turbo" synthetic engine oil is formulated exclusively for BMW M engines from 2001-2013 (including 3/2000+ M5). This is the newest BMW 10W60 oil, now produced by Shell, and replaces the previous Castrol TWS and Edge 10W60 engine oil. The new oil is offered in the same viscosity grade but with a slightly revised formula that meets API SN specs. The new formula has a new additive package that promotes greater fuel efficiency and less emissions, especially on cold start ups.
The BimmerWorld view: We're not huge fans of the latest BMW oil in general. On paper and lab tests, it appears the focus has shifted to emissions and fuel economy rather than providing ultimate wear protection. While less cold-start friction, better fuel economy, and fewer emissions sounds nice we have to wonder at what cost? As we have seen with other new BMW oils, these come at the expense of thermal protection. Early indications and research show that the new API SN 10W60 oil is thinner at high operating temps and provides less sheer resistance. Only time will tell if the new formula is actually an improvement in bearing protection and oil consumption. For years our strong preference has been Red Line 15W50. Despite the SAE weight, the 15W50 is thinner at cold temps and provides better sheer resistance and strength than factory oil (or Shell or Castrol).
