This is the replacement hydraulic tensioner with pulleys for the main drive belt on the 1999-2003 M62TU engine used in the E39 540i, E39 M5*, E38 740i, and E53 X5 4.4i/4.6is.

This is an assembled piece that includes the tensioner as well as two deflection pulleys. Perfect for when a complete overhaul is called for. The tensioner is like a small shock absorber that maintains pressure on the belt. A loose belt will cause insufficient charging from the alternator, poor cooling performance from the water pump, and stiffer steering from lower power steering pump output. It might also lead to the belt slipping from the pulleys or premature belt wear.

*for E39 M5 the small bracket at the top of the tensioner is not used. This is a 540i M62 bracket and the S62 bracket is slightly different. Re-use your original S62 bracket.
