Our Stage 3 power upgrade for the N20 turbo four cylinder in the F22 228i, F30 328i, and F32 428i is a reflash of the stock computer with performance software. The flash software is different than the Speed-Buster piggyback module used in Stages 1 and 2 because of the additional maps and data that can be modified. With the piggyback, there are three data sensors that are manipulated (two pressure and a camshaft position) but we modify over 40 data maps in the software code with the flash upgrade.

Modifying the software code gives us access and full control over multiple maps for fuel, ignition timing, camshaft and VANOS control, boost pressure, torque limiters, throttle response, and others. These are maps that any piggyback module simply can't touch or control. Most importantly, we do not modify or disable any of the factory safeguards built into the software. This ensures that overboost and knock monitoring remain in place for maximum protection. Our software was developed with Epic Motorsports on multiple cars and dynos at the same time as our N20 Big Turbo package (Stage 5). We also incorporated our hard-won knowledge from five years of racing the F30 328i in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series - no other BMW tuning and parts company has more experience with this model on the racetrack.

Software is installed with the Epic Motorsports Electronic Calibration Interface (ECI) connected to the OBD port in your dash. The tool will read and save a copy of your stock software, which is then e-mailed to us for modification. A new tuned version of your original file is returned to you. This is better than off-the-shelf software tunes that never look at your original software. You can continue to drive the car while your tuned file is being processed.

The Stage 3 software is similar but not the same as our Big Turbo Stage 5 software file. Using the bigger MHI turbo flows much more air that is cooler and denser than the stock turbo. This requires revised fuel and ignition maps. Upgrading from Stage 3 to Stage 5 is easy.
