The cam shaft position sensor (CPS) is a common failure item on many 1999-2006 model BMW 6 cylinders. This sensor was used on many 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004,  2005 and 2006 model 3 Series, 5 Series, X3 and X5 models with the 2.5 / 2.8 and 3.0 liter straight six 24v engine (dual vanos). 

When this sensor fails (or begins to fail), it will normally throw engine codes as well as a check engine light. The engine will likely go into what's known as "limp mode", which is BMW's safety program and makes the car feel very low on power, rough running with hesitation to accelerate. Should the sensor completely stop sending a signal, it can (and will) leave you stranded on the side of the road. If it fails while parked, it can also create a no start situation as well.
