This is a Timing Chain Replacement Kit as referenced by BMW for the N20 and N26 engines found in many 2012-2016 BMW 228i/328i/428i/528i and X3/X4 28i AWD models. The N20 and N26 engines are known to have a problem with the timing chain and guides that were originally installed at the factory. The timing chain can develop slack that causes rapid wear on the sprockets and plastic guides. If not addressed, this issue can lead to major engine problems.
This package contains the same replacement items that the dealers use under the factory Service Bulletin (SIB11 03 17), including the oil pump chain and sprocket. Check with your dealer to see if your car is eligible for this factory timing chain repair. Or if you're out of warranty this kit contains all of the same components for a independent replacement using Genuine and OEM suppliers.

The primary symptom of a timing chain problem is a whining noise while the engine is revved. Another telltale sign is excessive wear on the chain and the guides. You can have a peek at the chain and upper guide by removing the oil cap and looking through the oil fill hole on the valve cover.
Replacement of these requires the front timing covers, oil pan, and top valve cover to be removed. However, due to the depth of the job and intricacies with the timing systems (VANOS), only technicians with BMW experience should perform the work. Special tools and additional parts may be required.
Manual Transmission note: the front crank hub had two versions, with laser anti-slip etching or with a separate anti-slip grip disc (washer). The grip disc must only be used with a non-etched crank hub. This is why we don't include the grip disc in our kit - you may not need it if you have the laser-etched hub.
Buying Genuine BMW parts will usually be more expensive than an OEM or aftermarket brand but you are assured that it meets BMW's designs for fitment, performance, and longevity. It will also be the very latest design, incorporating any updates or revisions that an aftermarket brand typically will ignore.
