Crank Pulley with Vibration Damper, Febi - E46, E39, E60, X3, X5, Z4, (M54, M56)

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 11237513862 (11 23 7 513 862) and is described as "Crank Pulley with Vibration Damper" for BMWs with the M54 or M56 engine, as used in the 2003-2006 model years (not for cars built before 9/2002).

This pulley mounts on the front of the M54 and M56 SULEV engines and serves to both power the drive belts, but also act as the harmonic balancer and vibration damper for the engine. When the vibration damper fails, it can cause resonant vibration in the engine which can lead to catastrophic engine failure. If your engine has developed a "shake" or odd vibration, you should inspect and replace the front pulley if the internal vibration membrane is damaged or visibly "spilling out." Once the damper fails,  it will essentially make your crank shaft turn out of balance, which can cause serious damage.

As the lowest pulley on the engine it's also the most exposed to road salt, sand, and other debris. Damaged, rusted, or worn dampeners should be replaced to properly set the timing of the engine.

Removal and installation requires a new crankshaft bolt, BMW part #11211720633.

This part is manufactured by an aftermarket supplier of European auto parts, including many engine components. While not carrying OEM status, this part follows the design of the original very closely and uses similar materials. An aftermarket part may even have the same TUV approval as its OEM counterpart. The brand may even be OEM to another manufacturer besides BMW. This aftermarket brand has a two year warranty - the same as Genuine BMW and OEM brands.
