Please note: This E39 540i exhaust features a downward pointing exhaust tip, just like the factory down-turned 540i exhaust. If your E39 540i came with the factory "M Sport" option (offered in 2001, 2002 and 2003) you may want to cut and weld/clamp a straight exit exhaust tip to suit your 540i's M-Technic (M5 style) rear bumper. This is optional, but something we suggest. 1999 and 2000 models aren't an issue, nor are any 2001, 2002 or 2003 non-sport model with the "regular" rear bumper. It's only an issue if you have the "M" style rear bumper, but the exhaust still fits and works.

The E39 540i sounds "OK" from the factory -- Although the super restrictive factory exhaust system makes it hard to even hear it! Since the E39 540i's stock system was designed for the average (non-enthusiast) BMW 5-series owner, there's only a whisper of the available performance. The "tank like" original muffler system restricts both power and sound. The MagnaFlow exhaust for 1999-2003 540i cures that problem with a free flowing performance muffler that gives a sportier, moderately aggressive sound. The smooth, deep tone is suitable for mild-mannered street cars driving around town, yet it opens up nicely under wide-open throttle to have you smiling all the way to your 540i M62 4.4 liter V8's rev limiter. With a flick of the throttle, you may even catch a welcome V8 "burble", that no stock 540i V8 offers.
