The M44 engine found in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 model BMWs uses this emissions air pump to help improve vehicle emissions the first minute or so the engine warms up. Unfortunately when this pump fails, it will trigger fault codes and a check engine light which will prevent you from passing an emissions inspection.
