Secondary Air Pump / Emissions Pump - E46 323i 325i 328i 330i

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 11727553056 (11-72-7-553-056) and is described as Secondary Air Pump for E46 323i 325i 328i 330i based models. It is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment, towards the base of the windshield. This pump is made by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to BMW, which is either Kolbenschmidt or Pierburg -- both brands we prefer on our own BMWs for quality and longevity. 

This pump, sometimes called an auxiliary air pump, cycles air into the exhaust during cold starts for emissions purposes. If the pump fails, it will set an engine emissions fault code, triggering a check engine light. This fault will prevent you from passing many/most state emissions and safety inspections. Replacing the failed air pump will resolve the issue and allow the fault to be cleared.
