While the N55 turbo setup is generally considered a step forward in reliability for the turbo 6-cylinder models, turbo failures are fairly common and expected on BMWs with high mileage, age, hard and aggressive driving, and higher levels of boost due to modification. At some point in every N55's natural lifespan a turbo replacement will be required.
