BMW Diesel 5W30 carries a LL-04 approval and is API SN and ACEA C3 rated for low sulphur Diesel fuel and formulated for low ash content (SAPS). The BMW approval rating for this oil is LL-04 and it is the official recommendation for all BMW 328d, 335d, and X5 35d sold in the US. It can also be used in gasoline engines but BMW does not have an official approval of that for the US market.
The BimmerWorld view: the BMW LL-04 spec has been greatly confusing in the past, now it's in high demand. BMW never approved LL-04 for US gasoline engines because of the high sulfur content in our gasoline. It was approved for use in European gasoline and since 2014 the US and European fuels have a closer formula. LL-04 is the oil recommended by BMW for the M4 GT4 race car. Diesel oils typically have higher ZDDP content than gasoline oils, which is great for engine protection on higher mileage engines or for new engine break-in. In our view the BMW 5W30 Diesel oil is a great oil for street use with regular oil change intervals.
