The Conventional Process A common maintenance requirement for direct injection turbo engines (as used on BMWs and many other manufacturers such as VW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, and more) is an extensive physically cleaning process to remove carbon build up on the inlet valves. The process to clean this carbon build up involves either hard picks and tools or what's known as a “walnut blast”, where combustible ground up walnut shell media is blasted at the carbon deposits to break it up and remove it from the inlets and top of the intake valves. This is a lengthy and fairly costly procedure, though quite routine these days. Depending on how hard your car is driven, a walnut media blast cleaning may be required after 40-80k miles. Cars that see hard miles may see carbon build up and running problems in as little as 25-30k miles! The process to remove this carbon, using the conventional metal pick or walnut blast methods requires several HOURS by a trained technician. This can be quite costly and involve replacing other parts as the intake manifolds and other parts must be removed to gain physical access to the intake ports of the cylinder head.
A Simpler Way To Clean Intake Inlets While this chemical treatment does not fully replace the need for walnut media blasting or manifold-off cleanings, using the Total Intake System Cleaner can help INCREASE the time and mileage between full scale physical inlet cleanings. The process is far simpler than walnut blasting, and takes much less time. Experienced DIY mechanics can perform the process is under an hour, and the results were noticeable on our BimmerWorld employee and project cars. We used a bore scope before and after on several BMWs in the BimmerWorld fleet, and in every application we saw less carbon residue and deposits on the walls of the inlet ports and intake valves.
Good for High-Mileage Cars OR Newer / Low-Mileage Cars Whether you are trying to catch-up on intake system maintenance, or hoping to stave off or avoid costly intake cleaning down the road on a newer direct-injection BMW (or other make), the Red Line Total Intake System Cleaner is good for any vehicle at any age or mileage. On a higher mileage vehicle the cleaning process can be performed multiple times, with 500 mile intervals in between, to clean long term build up. On a newer model with less miles, the cleaning process can be run annually (or periodically) to help reduce carbon build up before it accumulates and requires more invasive cleaning later. And this cleaner is tested for both gas or diesel vehicles.
How It Works Application requires some know-how of your engine and platform, such as finding the best access point to inject the product via the supplied applicator hose(s). Typically this is done by slipping the S-hook attachment inside an intake elbow as close to the throttle body as possible. The cleaner product comes pre-pressurized at 40 ft/lbs in an aerosol canister, making it easy to apply the atomized product while the engine is running. The finely misted product follows the intake air stream, attaching itself to the carbon molecules of any build-up in tract or inlets, as well as the backside of the intake valves. The solvent leaves the can cold and hits this carbon hot spots, helping shock them apart, loosening them from the intake ports, and helping dislodge the carbon from your engine and safely downstream.
Safe for Electronics & Internal Components This chemical cleaning process is tested safe for Oxygen Sensors, EGR Valves, and Catalytic Converters. This cleaning process will not harm any of these sensitive components. It's also safe for any interior surfaces of your intake tract that are coated such as paint, anodized or hard coated surfaces. The active ingredients will target the accumulated carbon deposits without harming anything else along the way.
