There's a number of reasons for BMW X5 tailgate malfunctions and the spindle drive is one of the top causes for a open or close failure.
The X5 rear hatch strut includes the main spindle drive gear mechanism that lifts and lowers the hatch as well as supports it when open. If your X5 hatch no longer opens or closes, moves slowly, or makes grinding or other odd noises, the spindle drive could be one culprit.
This is for the left side (driver's side) on US model BMW X5. Installation is simple as it uses the familiar ball stud used with any other BMW hood or trunk strut. For replacement, the tailgate must be in the fully open position. No programming or electronic syncing should be required - it should be near full extension to install and the closed setting is determined by a microswitch on the body.
