This is the fuel filter and heater assembly for the F10 535d, F02 740d, E70 X5 35d, and F15 X5 35d. The filter should be replaced as part of a regular maintenance program. A clogged fuel filter will usually cause hard starting, drivability issues, and even lean condition fault codes. It could also cause more severe damage to fuel injectors, fuel pump, or even internal engine damage if fuel shortage issues are not solved quickly. A fuel filter is cheap insurance and not to be overlooked!
The heater thins Diesel fuel in colder temps where it can become too thick to flow through the system. Replacing the filter can be done independently from the heater but if you suspect your heater is not functioning this is a ready-to-install assembly.
